The bed below (queen size) has finials at the top of the bedposts. I turn these on the lathe, and they are mounted with a 1/4" steel post that inserts into the top of the pencil post. These can be added to any bed. The cost is the same as the cross pieces—$100. This cost is included in the price of a bed. However, it can be deducted if the buyer does not wish to have finials or cross pieces at the top of the posts.
Below is a shot showing the exposed bed bolt design that I generally use. Clients have complimented me on how easy it is to assemble the bed with this system and that the result is a very solid bed. Also, the bolts can be easily tightened if needed in dryer months of the year. This design was inspired by the use of an exposed bolt on trestle tables that were used by the Shakers. I did design a bolt system that is hidden, but assembly is a bit more complicated, and I do need to charge an extra $400 as this requires substantial additional labor.
This bed is a grand addition to any bedroom. Precisely hand-planed eight-sided tapering posts and iron-bolted joints make for a hearty feel, while the clean, slender lines are very elegant.
Add $200 for the upper cross pieces or the finials.
